Maritime Educational Scholarship
 
The Youth Maritime Training Association (YMTA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting students who wish to pursue careers in the maritime industry including the marine sciences.
 
Awards:
The scholarships may be used by students pursuing maritime training and education in community colleges, technical and vocational programs, colleges, universities, maritime academies or other educational institutions. Scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of one $5,000, one $3,000, and two $1,000 in the spring of 2008. In addition, Pacific Maritime Magazine will award a $500 scholarship to one of the finalists planning to pursue a seagoing maritime career.
 
Eligibility:
§ Planning to pursue a post-secondary training or educational program leading to a maritime or marine related career.
§ Under age 21 at time of application.
§ Enrolled as a senior in a high school or affiliated high school program, including GED program in the State of Washington.
§ Grade point average of at least 2.5 or an additional letter of recommendation from a second teacher (see Application Procedures below).
§ Relatives of members of the YMTA Executive Board or the Scholarship Committee are not eligible for YMTA Scholarships.
§ The recipient of the Pacific Maritime Magazine scholarship must have plans to pursue a seagoing maritime career.
 
Application Procedure and Deadlines:
There are two parts, student application and education project, to the Scholarship process and two deadlines.
 
Student Application Deadline:
Received by YMTA Scholarship Committee Chair by Friday, February 20, 2009.
 
Educational Project. Deadline:
Draft received by Scholarship Committee Chair by Monday, April 3, 2009.
 
Oral presentation to a panel of judges on Saturday April 18, 2009 in Seattle at Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center.

Scholarship

Value of Scholarship:
$5000.00 will be awarded to each of the two eligible applicants.

Eligibility:
Any student with an affiliation with the Marine Insurance Association of Seattle accepted into a school of higher education. Preference will be given to those applicants intending to study marine/insurance related fields.

1. Applicant must have a grade point of 2.5 or better
2. Applicant must be a full time student
3. Applicant must have a responsible motor vehicle driving record

Requirements:
1. Completed application
2. Two letters of recommendation (one personal and one professional)
3. Copy of last grade transcript or G.E.D. certificate
