| Dear Ballard Maritime Family!
Greetings from Salish Sea Expeditions and your children!
As Education Director at Salish, one of my responsibilities
is providing land-based support for the programs that
are out on the boat. This means I'm lucky enough to
hear about the day's activities during my periodic check-ins
with the boat crew. I spoke this afternoon with the
staff aboard and want to share that your students are
having a great time!
It sounds like they had a smooth arrival this morning,
and they were in high spirits as they got underway.
With strong sailing winds, it was a beautiful day to
be out around the islands. They spent today learning
to operate Carlyn, navigating around the San Juan Islands
as they chose their first sampling locations, preparing
meals for one another, and tonight they will spend the
night at James Island - a perennial favorite. The wind
has enabled the students to learn a great deal about
the physics of sailing, and they have high hopes for
a continued good breeze during the rest of their expedition.
Their science research project is well under way. Their
prediction "If we test plankton (phyto- and zoo-)
at different depths, there will be more at the top because
we know phytoplankton photosynthesize and zooplankton
eat phytoplankton" is providing lots of opportunity
for discussion, and they've seen some great plankton
under their microscopes. On a larger scale, they've
also spotted several seals and birds, which is always
a thrill!
As I type, they're enjoying their dinner at their evening
camp on James Island, a beautiful state park near the
east edge of the San Juans, with breathtaking views,
and several interesting beach trails to explore. They
will spend their day tomorrow navigating back towards
Anacortes as they complete their final sampling! For
an interactive map of the area, including these locations,
please visit this page.
All systems are go for another great day aboard, and
I'm sure your child will have lots of stories to tell
about the adventures of the last couple days. I've attached
a photo of the boat Carlyn, your child's home for two
three days! In the weeks following your child's expedition,
please visit the Salish Sea Expeditions website at www.salish.org
for photos of the Ballard trip!
Fair Winds,
Jenny
