Silent Auction Items needed for Fund Raising Dinner
A great way to support the Fund Raising dinner is to donate some items for the silent auction. Last year items donated included: Custom fused glass plates / artwork, Wine, Vodka, Large Begonia plant, Smoked Salmon, Yardwork by Gary Stauffer, Home cooked meals ... Please consider putting together a unique item or personal service to put in the Auction.
And the best way to make money is to invite family and friends to come to the dinner and bid on the items you have worked so hard to contribute. See you all there for a fun evening celebrating our teenagers and their school.

Report to NOAA
2008 – 2009 Ballard Maritime Academy/NOAA Partnership
Mid-Year Grant Report (8/1/2008 – 1/31/2009)

This is the project progress report for Ballard Maritime Academy/NOAA partnership grant for the students
of Ballard High School:
Fall Fisherman’s Festival
For the first academy event this year, students attended the Fall Fisherman’s Festival at Fisherman’s Terminal. Students manned the academy booth, greeting the visitors and explaining about our program. Students also ran an ROV (remote-operated vehicle) in a tank full of water for visitors to attempt to maneuver. The constant rain during the day made for thin crowds but the West Wall at Fisherman’s Terminal was surrounded by cheering fans for the survival suit races. Many different teams competed, some from different fishing vessels, local Sea Scout units, the University of Washington, and even the US Coast Guard. Our team this year, consisting of Jamie Thelen, Haley Jackson, Nick Farmasonis and Connor Aakervik got off to a fast start, and were in the water in excellent time. Entering the raft, however, proved to be the Achilles’ heel for this year’s team and they lost precious time trying to get that first swimmer in the boat. Despite that, the team finished well, even beating the Coast Guard team.
Sail Sandpoint 2008
For this year’s annual retreat to Sail Sandpoint, we had the strongest north winds we’ve experienced, making for some great sailing conditions and some very wet sailors. Students launched a number of Hobie catamarans from the beach and Hunter 140 sailboats from the inner boat harbor. With sunny skies and 10 – 15 knots of wind all day, students were zipping across Lake Washington, trying to keep the boats upright in the strong gusts. Thanks to some wonderful parent volunteers, the students had hot cocoa to warm them up, and fresh grilled wild Alaskan salmon and polish sausage for lunch. Besides sailing, students paddled kayaks in the lake and donned survival suits for a warm float. Of course some students bypassed the suits altogether and just jumped in off the pier in their wet clothes.
Duwamish “Toxic Tour” with Seattle Aquarium
The Duwamish waterway flows through the heart of Seattle’s industrial south end and into Elliott Bay, Seattle’s valuable deep-water harbor. As part of our partnership with the Seattle Aquarium, academy students had the opportunity to travel with aquarium staff up the river to study the health of the river, learn the history of the industrial waterway, and efforts to reverse the damage of years of industrial use. This information will prove useful to students who participate in our “Citizen Science” program with the aquarium in the spring.
Port of Seattle Field Trip
The Sophomore Maritime Survey students began the semester studying Shipping, World Trade and the Port of Seattle. In class, the students have created their own foam container ships, learning the basics of ship design and construction in the process, and will compete with each other to see whose ship can carry the most cargo the length of our test tank.

Cal Maritime trip this summer
Mr. Foster and Ken Passe are planning a BMA trip to Cal Maritime in August. They will partner with a Los Angeles school on this trip which has a Homeland Security Program. The expectations are that 10 sophomores / juniors will attend. This will give them those students interested in attending Cal Maritime in the future time to plan and apply. The group discussed a possible gift to bring to the LA group and Cal Maritime hosts. Ken and John are still ironing out the details of the costs. John believes that the LA group received a grant from a stevedoring group.

Zodiaq trip
The annual Zodiaq trip is rescheduled to May 8 - 9 - 10.

Student Club
Mr. Foster has started a Ballard Maritime Club for the students at Ballard High School. They have met several times to plan some outings and design & order BMA Sweatshirts. They envision the club as a vehicle to foster leadership skills through service project work. And the BMA club will provide a format for "adventures" outside school time. Planning meetings are held during lunchtime and we have a lot of enthusiasm as we are in the planning stages of the club.
The President of the BMC is Joanna Corey, AKA Captain Corey. The Vice President is Jaysen Niedermeyer, AKA First Mate Niedermeyer. The Treasurer is Nate Hegerberg, AKA Purser Nate.
One project the club is working on is the float for the Ballard Parade.

Citizen Science
The citizen science class is off and running. They will be at the beach for three days this spring. Parents are welcome to attend. See the dates and locations at the right. If you wish to attend the Presentations, please register with Ms. Vogel in advance to get clearance to enter the NOAA facilities at Sandpoint.

Monterey National Marine Sanctuary Senior Trip.
Ms. Vogel took fourteen seniors to CA in Jan to learn about dune ecology, went whale watching and were able to spend two days 'behind-th-scenes" at the Aquarium.

Oceanography Class:
Ms. Vogel is talking with the U of W about offering a full year class in Oceanography for Seniors with the possibility of earning college credit. Check back for more information.

BMA Website:
We are working to create a place where you can get information about the academy, and where prospective parents can learn about the school, careers, along with the fun the students have. If you have anything to contribute, please email it to us. We are looking for photos, stories, events and updates. BallardMaritime.home.comcast.net
Check out the Educator Awards page for the
Golden Apple Presentation to Megan Vogel.
